It also became the governor’s residence, a worship place and even a police station. But now, it is held as a museum. It was in 1600 when the Danish government occupied the tiny island. This very US National Landmark is the one which protected the entire town from various pirates and other European armed conquerors.

For the last 14 years, the pastor who led the church services was rev. Jeffrey Gargano. The entire credibility of the church also depends on the status it holds in the world. It belongs to one of the oldest denominations in the US which is the Reformed Church founded in 1862.

Its walls are all fireproof since the building was made out of bricks and other kinds of stones instead of wood. Those stones were believed to be quarried from Europe. Its sand floor is another of its most interesting features. Many legends say that this is the very path that Moses and his children walked for the whole 40 years.

Consistent restorations were being made to the place and by 1995 to around 1996, there was a tiny museum that was added to the synagogue. It was named after Johnny Weibel who was a congregation member. The said museum displays the history of the congregation and some of the rest of the Jewish history spread on the island.

The St. Thomas Reformed Church will be celebrating 350 years this 2010. In St. Thomas, there will be activities, concerts, services and visiting artist performances.
St. Thomas Reformed Church was established in 1660 by the first organized group of European settlers to the island. It’is one of the oldest congregations in the Caribbean. Part of the Reformed Church in America, founded by Dutch settlers in Manhattan in 1628, the church is the oldest denomination in America.
It was first named St. Thomas Protestant Reformed Dutch Church, the first services took place in Fort Christian, the site of which is now a museum and historical site in Charlotte Amalie. This church, which was built in the mid-1670s, was in use until 1731. The church’s subsequent two buildings on Snegle Gade were both destroyed by fire.
The church’s current location, constructed between 1844 and 1848, is at the corner of Crystal and Nye Gades. Though the church was destroyed by Hurricane Marilyn in 1995, the work of hundreds of volunteers restored it to its original state.

This stunning synagogue is made up of bricks and stone that withstood fires and hurricanes in the past. It was further strengthened by cement with mortar, limestone and molasses to hold everything up. According to literature, the bricks were left by merchants in exchange for local commodities.

Another unique feature of the synagogue is the Dutch-made pillars symbolizing the Judaism matriarchs. A museum was also built in this majestic site that shows Jewish artifacts found on the island. Come and visit this synagogue for an experience once in a lifetime.

What captivate most of the tourists that visit this magnificent church are the murals created by the late Fr. Leo Servais and Brother lldephonsus in 1901. These murals are painted on the walls and ceilings of the church remind the people about the Old and New Testaments main scenarios.

Before the reformed church’s stable location at the corner of Crystal Gade and Nye Gade, it was just rebuilt on Barrack Yard and Snegle Gade. The four tall and sturdy pillars on the entrance and the large front doors are unique for its design because it resemble the Greek architecture relived in the West Indies.
